One of our favourites from Sheffield Doc/Fest 2012, Planet of Snail is out on DVD on the 27th May, and we are pleased to be giving away two copies courtesy of the film’s distributor Dogwoof.
The film follows blind-deaf Young-Chan and his wife in their every day life, where they rely only on their tactile senses and communicate by touch – a reason for why Young-Chan is said to come from the Planet of Snail. He provides the film with a poetic voice-over in which he reflects on his astronaut-like existence without sight and hearing.
This film is a rare chance to see creative documentary talent from Korea reaching a wide international audience, as well as a unique portrayal of an unseen minority by director Seung-Jun Yi, which Sight and Sound called “a beautiful evocation of love; more precisely though, it’s also a fastidious account of the labour of togetherness.”
